The pile foundation is a method for enhancing the terrain, which is used in cases of bad mechanical indices of the soil and the ground foundation, as well as with structures that are built over or in the water.
When digging works are to be implemented at plots that are located in close proximity to existing buildings and other facilities and there is not enough space for making sustainable digging, then should be implemented a tight and secure strengthening of the slope to prevent movement of the earth layers that would violate the integrity of the existing structures. In this case, piles are also used, which strengthens the vertical side of the trench.
The pile foundation method is used in cases, where there is no option for deep excavations to be made. In this case, the piles penetrate deep into the ground, thus ensuring stability of the base (foundation) of the building.
Generally speaking, the piles are long elements that could be cast into the depth of the soil (only in soil with certain mechanical properties) or directly to be stuck by using the proper technique.
The piles that are stuck are more widely applicable and could be made out of wood, concrete and steel. They are made mainly in factories with the most appropriate section and profile - round (solid or hollow), square or octagonal. The steel piles are most commonly made with tubular or H-shaped cross section. The tubular section is filled with concrete in order to increase the strength of the pile.
In the practice of reinforcement and strengthening of the foundations of existing buildings and architectural monuments are now widely used the so-called "micro-piles", which have a significantly smaller diameter than the standard piles and less length.
During their installation, the vibrations that are generated are insignificant and the amount of the ejected soil is considerably less. The micro-piles are usually used during the reinforcement of excavations, ditches and unstable slopes, as they can be driven in both vertically and steeply.
During the construction works are also applied the so-called "CFA-piles", that are injected directly into the soil and in depth through a special drill and before the concrete mix hardens, the reinforcement is poured inside them.
In recent years, the pile foundation method is used more widely especially in the big cities where the number of the building plots is decreasing and many companies start building on more unfavorable plots and soil conditions. Most of the new hotels along the Black Sea coast and the new buildings in the central zones of the major cities are built using these pile constructions.
During the studies made prior to the implementation of the project are identified the ground condition, the soil and the terrain, on which the construction site will be located and if necessary is applied the pile foundation.
